Sono – Sound Meter  |  iOS  |  Last updated: July 2025

Your audio is never recorded, saved, or transmitted anywhere. All sound measurements happen entirely on your device. Sono displays ads via Google AdMob. Ad-related data (such as your device's Advertising Identifier) is collected only with your explicit permission through Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt.

1. Microphone access

Sono requires microphone access to measure sound levels in real time. Audio is processed on-device only using iOS's AVAudioEngine framework. No audio recordings are stored on your device, and no audio data is ever transmitted to any server. The microphone is active only while a session is running — it is released as soon as you pause or leave the app.

You can revoke microphone permission at any time via iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → Sono. Without microphone access the app cannot take measurements.

2. Optional analytics (Firebase Analytics)

Off by default. During first launch, you can choose whether to share anonymous usage data. You can change this choice at any time in Sono → Settings → Share analytics.

When enabled, Sono sends the following data to Google Firebase Analytics:

No label text, notes, or audio content is ever included in analytics events. Firebase Analytics assigns a pseudo-anonymous app instance ID per installation. This identifier is not linked to your Apple ID, name, or any other personal information, and is reset if you delete and reinstall the app. The app does not access the iOS Advertising Identifier (IDFA).

Firebase Analytics retains event data for up to 14 months. Google's privacy policy applies to data processed by Firebase: policies.google.com/privacy.

3. Optional crash reporting (Firebase Crashlytics)

Off by default. You can enable or disable crash reporting at any time in Sono → Settings → Share crash reports.

When enabled, Crashlytics automatically collects:

No microphone data, session content, or personal information is included in crash reports. Firebase Crashlytics retains crash data for up to 90 days.

4. Data stored locally on your device

Sono stores the following data locally using iOS system storage (UserDefaults and SwiftData). None of this data leaves your device unless you explicitly enable analytics or crash reporting above.

All local data is deleted when you uninstall the app. Sono has no account system and does not sync data to iCloud or any server.

5. Advertising (Google AdMob)

Sono displays banner advertisements served by Google AdMob (Google LLC) to support the free app model.

What AdMob may collect:

Personalized vs. non-personalized ads: If you allow tracking via Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) prompt, AdMob may use your IDFA to serve ads tailored to your interests across other apps and websites. If you deny tracking — or if you are in the EEA/UK and do not consent via the consent form — AdMob serves contextual (non-personalized) ads only, based solely on the content of the app and your general location. Denying tracking does not disable ads; it only affects personalization.

Google's data collection and use practices are described in Google's Privacy Policy: policies.google.com/privacy. You can review Google's ad settings at adssettings.google.com.

6. App Tracking Transparency (ATT)

On first launch, iOS will display Apple's standard App Tracking Transparency prompt asking whether you allow Sono to track your activity across other companies' apps and websites. This permission controls whether AdMob may access your device's Advertising Identifier (IDFA).

You can change this choice at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking → Sono.

7. GDPR & EEA / UK users

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the United Kingdom, Sono uses Google's User Messaging Platform (UMP) — a consent management tool — to present a GDPR-compliant consent form on first launch. This form lets you choose whether to allow personalized advertising. Your choice is stored locally and can be reviewed or changed at any time via Sono → Settings → Manage Ad Preferences.

The legal bases for data processing under GDPR are:

EEA/UK users have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict, or object to the processing of their data. Contact us at the address in Section 11 to exercise these rights. For data held by Google, visit myaccount.google.com.

9. Data deletion and revoking consent

You can withdraw or adjust consents at any time:

Withdrawing consent stops future data collection but does not erase data already transmitted to Google. To request deletion of data Google holds, visit myaccount.google.com. To delete all locally stored data, uninstall the app.

10. Children

Sono is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA/UK). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. AdMob is configured to serve non-personalized, child-directed ad requests where applicable. If you believe a child has been exposed to personalized ads or has shared information through the app, contact us at the address below and we will take appropriate action.

11. Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the app after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
